Peer to Peer Discipleship with Amy Knuppe

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen Podcast, Hunter is talking with her friend Amy Knuppe on the topic of discipleship.  Amy is originally from the Midwest but currently lives in Vermont with her wonderful husband, Austin. She is mom to two sons; a three year old and newborn. She is grateful to love her career as an orthopedic and vestibular physical therapist but even more grateful to be spending a year working at home full-time loving and discipling her kids.

  1. Can you tell us a little about who you are and what you do?

  2. What is discipleship centered around?

  3. How does doing life together under the Word of God, centered around the gospel, enable us to disciple one another in Christian community?

  4. I know you’ve moved around quite a bit. Practically speaking, do you go about finding such a community?

  5. How do you cultivate meaningful conversations in that context?

  6. Do you find that discipleship often goes both ways? How?

  7. What are some ways you’ve learned from your peers as you do life together?

  8. How do you practice vulnerability and confession with your peers? What’s the value in doing that?

  9. How can we receive one another’s confessions in a way that points us to the gospel?

  10. What is the importance of also seeking mentorship from older women and pouring into younger women as we learn from our peers?

TWO QUESTIONS WE’RE ASKING EVERY GUEST THIS SEASON

  1. How have you seen yourself grow in your ability to make disciples? What has been the most helpful practice/thing you’ve done to develop this skill?

  2. What’s one question you would encourage women to ask an older woman in their life, maybe even today, after listening to this conversation?

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

“A disciple is someone who follows Jesus. Discipleship is the encouraging and equipping of other believers to do the same.”

“Jesus starts his ministry by calling his disciples to simply follow him and spends much of his time in ministry allowing them to hear his teaching, observe him demonstrating his authority, patiently correcting them, and revealing his character to them, until their hearts are transformed enough to understand and appreciate that he is indeed the true Son of God.”

“It’s not about the size of your faith, it’s about the object of your faith.”

“I need help to remember to fix my eyes on Jesus.”

“Being part of the Body of Christ is absolutely necessary for discipleship.”

“Pray. God is willing and able to provide community for you.”

“God wants you to be a part of his body.”

“Keep in mind that our American culture tends to be driven by consumerism and individualism, so you have to actively participate.”

“Find a place to serve. Every church needs help in some area.”

“Join a Bible study where you are reading and studying Scripture together.”

“Think about what you might want to be asked and ask those.”

“It’s never too late to start the process.”

“Discipleship lessons in the local church are so often caught rather than taught.”

“Discipleship is not about knowledge and behavior modification. It is about having a heart of flesh and a changed heart as we understand our own sin condition and our own need to be rescued from it.”

“Respond with your presence and speaking the truth in love.”

“With confession we encourage repentance and the turning from sin.”
