Developing a Biblical Worldview with Dianne Jago

This is the first episode in our series, “Theology in Practice: Knowing God Changes Who We Are and How We Engage with the World.” This episode was recorded before the COVID-19 outbreak, but the four episodes to follow in this series will very much speak to the current, crazy circumstances revolving around COVID-19 and we pray they will be a help to you. The most helpful thing you can intake, ever, particularly in times of crisis, is the Word of God. Whether you’re at home with school aged kiddos because their schools are shut down, fighting loneliness in your apartment or being driven crazy by your roommate, entertaining toddlers indoors for hours on end, or working late at the hospital taking care of those who are sick, this week’s episode with Dianne Jago will encourage you to invest whatever time you can being in God’s Word. Dianne founded Deeply Rooted Magazine, where she serves as the chief editor. She’s married to a military man named Ethan, has three kiddos, and lives in Florida, and she just published her first book, A Holy Pursuit. We talk about worldview, what it is, and how we can develop a Biblical worldview.

  1. Can you tell us a little about who you are and what you do?

  2. What is a worldview?

  3. How does our worldview impact the way we go about life? What are the consequences of our worldviews?

  4. What should the Christian worldview and approach to life be built on?

  5. How does this differ from a nonbeliever's worldview?

  6. How might our worldviews be unknowingly shaped by worldly thinking?

  7. What are some ways we see the early church being affected by worldly ideas? How does Scripture correct, rebuke, and exhort them towards truth?

  8. What are some worldly philosophies that are infiltrating our churches today? How does Scripture speak to those ideas?

  9. How can we be on guard against false teachings and practice discernment in the information we're intaking?

  10. I know all of our listeners want to develop a Biblical worldview. What encouragement do you have for them as they seek to do that?

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

“We all have a worldview. A worldview is the ideology, doctrine, or the principles that shape how people choose to live their lives.”

“A worldview seeks to answer these three questions:

  1. What am I?

  2. What is the world?

  3. What is my task and place within this world?”

“Christianity preserves this harmony between these three questions. It reveals a wisdom that reconciles a human being to God and through this with itself, with the world, and with life.”

“A worldview is basically our belief system, so it determines our decision making. It shapes how we use our time; it shapes who we choose to spend our time with and our standards for morality. If it’s not founded on God then it just drives us further and further into our own wisdom.”

“God’s Word is the foundation and bedrock for which we should build our life upon.”

“We have the Word of God to convict us and to help show us when we are wrong and where we need to change our belief systems.”

“He is God and we are not.”

“A responsible Christian has an understanding of their belief system.”

“Examine the words people say and compare it to Scripture.”

“People are always searching for something.”

“The problem is most people don’t believe in an absolute truth, that there are standards. A lot of people believe, ‘that is your truth and this is my truth’ and as long as those truths don’t conflict between people when people are good.”

“What we consume matters.”

“One of the greatest areas being attacked in the Church is the gospel.”

“Prayer. Ask God to give us humility and understanding as we read the Bible. Get plugged into a solid, local church.”

“We are not meant to do this life alone.”

“Seek out practical ways to connect the gospel to your daily living.”

“Ask God for help.”

“The Lord will meet you right where you are right now. The past is past. When we allow failure to drive our walk with God, then we are going to constantly fall back into feelings of failure. Weakness is recognizing that we need God.”

“Weakness is the way.” -J.I. Packer

“Pick up your Bible and pray.”
