How the Resurrection Impacts Our Everyday Lives with Kristy Hunter

Happy Easter, ya’ll! On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Kristy Hunter about the resurrection! We talked about how the resurrection we’ll gather together to celebrate this upcoming Easter Sunday is actually something we can celebrate all the time! She said, “At our church, we talk about how we celebrate Easter every week. We don’t celebrate the risen Christ just on Easter. He’s seated at the right hand of God. He’s there. It’s not just once. He died and rose once. But because he lives we celebrate every week and every day.”

Our entire conversation is centered around the reality that Christ’s life, death and resurrection change every area of our lives as believers every single day! So you’ll know her a little better, Kristy was a friend of a mentor of mine back when I was in college! She’s also been married to Justin for almost 16 years and she’s the mama of two boys, Stevens and Stiles. They make their home in Northwest Arkansas--Woo Pig! She loves the life God has given her even though it's the life she never dreamt she'd be living. I can’t wait to share her passion for the Gospel with you guys today!

  1. Can you tell us a little about who you are and what you do?

  2. The resurrection of Jesus is foundational to the Christian faith, and yet, we so often only give it real thought around the Easter season. But the resurrection of Jesus is so important that Paul writes, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). And later he says, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (19). In light of what Paul teaches, I think it's safe to say that the resurrection is vital. But before we go there, I think we need to lay the foundation for why we needed Christ to come. Can you help to lay a foundation for why we desperately need the life, death, and resurrection of Christ?

  3. What does this mean for us? What are the effects of the resurrection?

  4. This whole concept sounds crazy. How do we know this actually happened?

  5. Why is the resurrection an essential element of the Gospel?

  6. As Christ-followers, what longings are filled by the resurrection?

  7. How does the reality of the resurrection flesh itself out in our everyday lives?

  8. What would it look like to live in light of the resurrection as a mother? As a college student? As a (business) professional?

  9. How can we do a better job of preaching the resurrection to ourselves? To others?

THREE QUESTIONS I ASK EVERY GUEST

  1. What 3 resources would you recommend for someone who wants to grow in their understanding of the resurrection?

  2. What are 3 of your simple joys?

  3. Who has had the biggest influence on your own journey with Jesus?

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

"You can’t separate the resurrection from the life and the death of Christ."

"This guy who proclaimed to be God. If [Jesus] didn’t raise from the dead he’s just another little 'g' god that died. Like every other god. But he’s not. He rose. He’s alive. And he rose bodily. And he’s seated at the right hand of God."

"I’m a sinner saved by grace by faith in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ."

"He’s sovereign over every detail."

"Why did Christ need to come? He needed to come because we are needy people and we cannot save ourselves."

"God promises in Genesis 3:15 that he will bring a redeemer."

"He died a death he didn’t deserve to die. He could have gotten off that cross at any point, but he didn’t. And he didn’t because he loves us. He endured the wrath of God that we justly deserve. And then He didn’t stay dead. And he didn’t stay dead because this has been the plan from all of time, that he would rise from the dead, because God was pleased, his sacrifice, his substitution on our behalf, was sufficient."

"[The Israelites] wanted a ruling king to relieve them of their circumstances. And they got a suffering servant who addressed their most vital need in being rescued from their sin."

"His sacrifice was final and sufficient for all of sin."

"Every word is this book is true."

"We handle God’s word carefully and reverently."

"How do you prove what’s true? Evidence."

"We celebrate Easter every week."

"We have the hope of Heaven! We are free from the penalty of sin, but one day we will be free from the presence of sin."

"This brokenness we live in will be gone. He will have made all things new."

"The power of the resurrection causes us to have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, in the person of the Holy Spirit, by faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, he has given us a helper. Because of that we have conviction of sin. Without the Holy Spirit we have no conviction of sin. We are able to repent of it."

"We need to be reminded of our sinfulness and Christ’s righteousness every day."

"We testify to the one we know."

"Suffering teaches us to trust him."

"We are at the end of ourselves, all we have to cling to is Jesus."

"When we understand the grace and the suffering he has lavished on us and experienced on our behalf, then we are compelled to give that grace to others that don’t deserve it either."

"When we believe the Gospel, then by his grace we can move toward others and extend grace."

"God, from before the foundation of the world, has prepared good works in advance for us to walk in and he has callings… Sometimes our callings aren’t things we want to do."

"Live according to your calling. This is where God has you."

"Because God is good and he knows what we need, [what is right in front of me] is God’s best for me right now."

"What my children need, more than for me to be perfect, is their Savior."

"He has lived the perfect life and we need to be reminded that we cannot add anything to the work of Christ, to the Gospel. We couldn’t add to it before salvation or after salvation. We have to rest in the one that did it perfectly for us."

"Jesus has done it all for me through his life, death, and resurrection."

"I have been declared not-guilty from the record of another."

"God’s goal is to root 'us' out of us in sanctification."

"Agree with God in what he calls sin, and then bring about reconciliation."

"Praise God that my ability to be a mom does not rest on being perfect because I'm not perfect, but there is one who is perfect and that is Jesus."
