Peace with David Platt

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, we’re chatting with David Platt about peace. We talked about who supplies our peace and how we can reconcile the reality that we have peace in Christ, even when our circumstances don’t feel particularly peaceful! So you’ll know him a little better, David Platt is the author of three New York Times bestsellers, including Radical. He is lead pastor at McLean Bible Church in metro Washington, D.C., the former president of the International Mission Board, and founder of Radical Inc., a global center for the unreached that serves churches in accomplishing the mission of Christ. Platt received his Master of Divinity (M.Div), Master of Theology (Th.M), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He lives in Virginia with his wife and their children.

  1. Can you share a little about who you are and what you do?

  2. How do you reconcile what you saw in the Himalayas—people without food, water, and seemingly without hope—with the reality that God is a God of peace?

  3. What does it mean for us to have peace?

  4. Who is the supplier of our peace?

  5. How do we reconcile knowing that we have peace in Christ when we don't feel particularly peaceful?

  6. If the gospel really is true and God is really good, where are the truth and goodness of God amid extreme poverty and pain? And where are his peace and protection for the oppressed and exploited?

  7. How is it possible to “let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts” with the reality that the tsunami of sin flooding the world today touches us all?

  8. How can we go about the work of being peace-makers in a way that draws people to Christ instead of pushing them away?

  9. How does coming face-to-face with men, women, and children in urgent spiritual and physical needs change the way you seek to mirror this aspect of God’s character (peace)?

  10. How can we mirror God by being peace-makers in whatever context he’s placed us in?

THREE QUESTIONS I ASK EVERY GUEST

  1. What 3 resources would you recommend for someone who wants to learn more about peace?

  2. What are your 3 simple joys?

  3. Who has had the greatest impact on your own journey with Jesus?

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES

“The peace of God supersedes circumstances.”

“There is a peace that comes from God that’s available in the gospel that supersedes even the worst suffering in the world.”

“There is a peace that God has designed for us to know amidst agony, trouble, and all kinds of things that would make us afraid (John 14:27). We’ve been given a calm.”

“Jesus said, ‘the same peace I have, I give to you.’ It’s not dependent on circumstances. It overrules circumstances and affects the way we view our circumstances.”

“We remember the peace we have in Christ. We have been justified before God. We have peace.”

“The whole reason we don’t have peace is because of sin in our hearts that separates us from God and the peaceful relationship we were designed to have with him. We’ve turned from him and were separated from him and that’s why we don’t have peace in our hearts.  The beauty of what God has done in the gospel is that he has not left us alone in this state of separation from him. He has come to us in the person of Jesus. He has died on the cross for our sins to pay the price for them so we can be reconciled to relationship with God, so that we can have peace with God.”

“When we trust in Jesus, no matter what could come to me or anyone of us today, nothing can take away the fact that I have peace with God. That is a rock solid foundation to stand on.”

“The only way to walk in peace when circumstances are not peaceful is to keep our eyes fixed on Christ.”

“God has put each of us where we are to be ambassadors for Christ right where we are. We are reflectors of the peace of God. Look around. The most urgent need that people around any of us has is to be reconciled to God.”

“Do what God has called us to do right where we are and be open to doing that wherever he might lead.”

“There are 2 billion people in the world right now who have little to no knowledge of Jesus.”

“The opportunities we have to be a part of what God is doing in the world are massive.”

“God will direct us, lead us, and orchestrate the course of our lives.”

“Don’t be surprised or too discouraged - it’s a battle in everyone of our lives. It’s a battle we have victory in. His life is in us and we are in him.”
